Chess in Stuttgart and the towns around it

Chess around Stuttgart is played in clubs. Nearly every town of the region, from Herrenberg and Leonberg in the west to Schorndorf, Göppingen and Geislingen in the east, has a Schachverein or the chess department of a sports club, and most of them keep one fixed weekday evening, Friday above all. Youth training comes before those evenings, and the opens of Deizisau, Böblingen and the Remstal mark the calendar.

Chess960 around Stuttgart

Over the board, Chess960 has no fixed place in the Region Stuttgart yet. None of the club pages read for this guide names a Chess960 evening or tournament, and the FIDE list of rated events in Germany shows none in the region. The one mention is second-hand: the news page of Schachclub Stetten on the Filder reports a member travelling to a Schach960 tournament in Schnaitheim, well beyond the region.

In Chess960 the pieces behind the pawns start from a shuffled position drawn before each game, so prepared opening lines are of no use from the first move. Until a club near Stuttgart adds it to its evening, the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

No dated Chess960 game on a real board in the Region Stuttgart appears in the pages read for this guide.

How to read an entry

At present the guide lists 101 entries; 101 of them are current or still waiting for a newer dated trace. They are drawn from the schach.in club register, the league portal of the Schachverband Württemberg, FIDE's list of rated tournaments, regional newspapers and the clubs' own websites, every one read on .

The order of a list carries no judgement: whichever entry has the most recent dated evidence stands first. A point that no page settles reads "not stated by sources" rather than a guess. Sources and method explains the status lines, the three source marks and what the guide leaves aside.

A club night moved, a course started?

Clubs around Stuttgart change rooms, merge their teams or move the Spielabend when a new season begins. If an entry has fallen behind, or a club, a youth group, a school team or a tournament is missing, a short note with a link to the page that shows it is enough.
