About this list

Two kinds of club share the boards of the region. Some are chess clubs in their own right, from the Stuttgarter Schachfreunde 1879 and Schachfreunde 1876 Göppingen to Schachclub Geislingen 1881; others are the chess department of a town's gymnastics or sports club, its TSV, TSG, SV or Spvgg, such as TSV Schönaich, TSG Steinheim or VfL Sindelfingen. Most of them field teams in the leagues of the Württemberg federation, whose fixtures are often the most recent dated trace a club leaves.

The club rooms are civic centres, old town halls, school buildings and club houses: the Bürgertreff Gablenberg, the Old Town Hall of Faurndau, the Grabenschulhaus in Murrhardt, Schloss Lautereck in Sulzbach an der Murr. The list is grouped by town, Stuttgart first and then the towns with more than one club; towns with a single club follow under the last heading.
